Pizza!

One of our favourite family traditions is also the simplest.

Once a fortnight - or whatever fits into our schedule/s - on a Friday or Saturday night we have "Pizza- Movie Night".

This tradition has been going on long before we officially became a family.  That's a lot of pizza!

We take turns choosing a fun movie to watch (usually one for the family and one for us once the kids are asleep), we make our own pizzas and we sit and eat in front of the TV.

This is a big treat because the television is never usually allowed on at dinner time and we all sit down at the table together.  It's a really important thing for busy families to have dinner together as much as possible, don't you think?

Mostly we stick to our favourite pizza toppings - pepperoni and supreme.  Sometimes we go a little bit fancy- cherry tomato, bocconcini and basil is delicious.

Then there are those times when we go off the chart awesome and make fun character pizzas...like an Angry Bird,

...or Chewbacca Angry Bird,

...or our most recent, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

Bonus points if you can tell me which turtle this is!!

It's really easy (not to mention SO much healthier) to make your own pizza from scratch.  I use this pizza dough recipe from Jamie Oliver's Jamie at Home cookbook, then throw on some passata, our toppings of choice and tear or grate some mozzarella over the top.

As for a gluten free base for me, well, I'm still searching for perfection.  Let me know if you've got a winner I should try!

Tell me, what's your easy/fun/favourite family tradition?

  1. I love family traditions. We have hamburger sundays in our family - casual way to force salad consumption...

  2. All the teenagers love to have pizza almost once a week. But this is a good idea to make it at home while enjoying the gathering.
